GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Indiana Tech women's volleyball team traveled to Grand Rapids, Michigan, over the weekend to take on two WHAC opponents in the defending WHAC champions Cornerstone University and Aquinas College. Tech came out victorious 3-2 on Friday night in a tight contest with the Golden Eagles before claiming a sweep over Aquinas to end the trip on Saturday. Tech remains perfect in conference play at 8-0.
The Warriors knew it would be a tough matchup against the defending champs on the road and saw that come to light in the first set on Friday night as Cornerstone took down Tech 25-22 to put the Orange and Black on their back foot. The Warriors found their footing in set two and came out swinging as they jumped to an early 4-0 lead, with
Noelle VanOort accounting for three of those with a kill and two service aces. This was the boost Tech needed as they would stretch their lead to ten at the 17-7 mark and would win 25-14 without ever trailing. Cornerstone flipped the script on Tech in the third set as they were the ones who took a 4-0 lead to start. Although Tech was able to get back into the set and even grab the lead 16-15, the Golden Eagles would prevail and claim it 25-22. The fourth set was a tightly contested set, with the largest lead for either team being 3. Cornerstone would reach that mark early in the set, 7-4, but after a battle, the Warriors would take the lead 22-19 for their largest lead of the set and wouldn't relinquish it to win 25-22. The Warriors would only trail for one point in the final set and walk off on a high note as junior outside hitter
Noelle VanOort put the exclamation point on the win with her 1,000th career kill as the match-winning point. VanOort becomes the 8
th Warrior to surpass the 1,000 career kills mark and is the second Warrior to do so this week.
Against the Saints, Tech looked to complete another 3-win week and did just that with a solid performance. In set one, the Orange and Black did a good job limiting the Saint's scoring runs, only allowing them to string together three points once. This allowed the Warrior offense to stay ahead and eventually lead to a 25-21 win. Set two was all Tech as they sprinted to a 6-1 lead and would not trail the remainder of the set to win 25-17. The Warriors looked for the sweep in set three and stretched an early lead out to 6 points at the 16-10 mark, but the Saints were reluctant to surrender as they chipped away at the Warriors lead and would end up knotting the game at 23. From there, the two teams alternated points, matching each other stride for stride, until the Orange and Black put two points together, with the game tied at 31. A kill from
Jacqueline Allaway put the game to rest and ensured the sweep for the Warriors.
The Warriors move to 18-2 on the season and return to action on Friday as they host Lawrence Tech at 7:00 p.m. in the Schaefer Center.
