Men’s Hockey Wins Huge WHAC Opening Series with Sweep Over UM-Dearborn

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The #20 ranked Indiana Tech men's hockey team takes home two victories after playing Michigan-Dearborn in a two-game series this past weekend, earning their second sweep of the season and moving to 4-0-0 overall. 

Friday night's game was on the road, played in Dearborn, Michigan. In game one, Indiana Tech found the lead first at the start of the first period when Ryan Doucette scored, assisted by Jeremy Dunmore and Mason Bazaluk. Only a few minutes later, Sebastian Potter found the back of the net, assisted by Malik Ali, which extended the lead to 2-0. Indiana Tech capitalized on a power play with a goal from Francesco Santaniello, assisted by Joey Mocnik and Ali. Michigan-Dearborn managed to get on the board late in the first, closing the first period at 3-1. In the second period, Indiana Tech's Potter scored his second goal of the game assisted by Nikita Ivasenko. The freshman from Gilbralter, Michigan would complete his hat trick not long after, on assists from Ian Vannelli and Mocnik, as Potter netted his third goal of the game in just his third game as a Warrior. Doucette added his second goal of the night at 13:17, assisted by Vannelli and Dunmore, giving Indiana Tech the 6-1 lead. Michigan-Dearborn fought back with a power-play goal, then followed by another goal right at the end of the second period. The lead was then trimmed to 6-3 heading into the third. In the final period of play Indiana Tech stretched the lead as Brandon Plummer scored at 13:14, bringing the score to 7-3. Michigan-Dearborn added a power-play goal at 15:14 in the third, but the Warriors held on to secure the 7-4 victory on the road. Goaltender Braedyn Funke played a total of 60 minutes in net, saving a total of 24 shots.

In game two at home, The Warriors secured a 6-1 victory over the Wolverines with five unanswered goals in the second period to launch them to victory. Michigan-Dearborn got on the board first late in the first period giving them a 1-0 lead heading into the second. Indiana Tech responded quickly in the second period as Austin Sawyer tied the game with a goal assisted by Alex Carrothers. 35 seconds later, Indiana Tech found the back of the net again with a short-handed goal by Pavel Svoboda, to take a 2-1 lead. The Warriors capitalized on a power-play at 14:13 into the second period as Connor Funke scored, assisted by Carrothers, extending the lead to 3-1. Indiana Tech didn't let off the gas, with Ethan Dominy adding a goal 17:28 into the period to make it 4-1. Only 21 seconds later, Funke scored his second goal of the period, assisted by Brandon Plummer, ending the second period with a 5-1 lead. In the third period, Indiana Tech sealed the win early on as Joey Mocnik scored, assisted by Dominy and Malik Ali, giving the Warriors the 6-1 lead that ended the night in a win at home. Goaltender Gage Reimer played a total of 60 minutes in net saving a total of 22 shots.

The Indiana Tech men's hockey team is hoping to keep the ball rolling, as they play another weekend series, this time against Cleary University. They play Friday, October 18th in Howell, Michigan and Saturday, October 19th at 7:30 pm at the SportONE/Parkview Icehouse.
