WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The NAIA's #12 ranked Indiana Tech women's basketball team played an exhibition match against NCAA D1 Purdue University on Tuesday night on the road at Mackey Arena. The Warriors would come into the game after defeating Huntington University in their season opener last Thursday and would look to put up a hard fight against Purdue in a good test to help prepare them for the long season ahead.
The Warriors would win the opening tip against the Boilermakers and go right down the court with
Taylor Covington scoring on a pull-up jumper off the opening possession to put Tech ahead 2-0. After one quarter of play, Covington would lead the Warriors with four points. In the second quarter, the Warriors would force a Purdue timeout after back to back triples from
Ava Ziolkowski and
Amaris Lowery to cut the deficit to just eight. Covington would lead Tech with four points at the halftime break, while Ziolkowski, Lowery, and
Na'Kiya Bonner would all add on three points for the Warriors.
The Purdue band and student section were rocking the entire game, and so were the over 3,300 fans in attendance, but the Orange & Black would battle well in one of the toughest environments in the Big Ten, giving the Boilermakers all they could handle. The Warriors would shoot the ball well in the second half, shooting over 45% from the field and over 36% from three. Ten total Warriors would score in the contest as they got it done by committee in this one.
Ava Ziolkowski would lead the way for Tech with nine points, while
Lauren Barton would chip in eight as the Warriors would put up 50 on the big ten opponent. Covington would finish with a team high four assists, while scoring six points for the Warriors.
Tech will play next this weekend when they host the WHAC/Chicagoland Classic. The Warriors will play Friday, November 1
st against Olivet Nazarene at 4pm and Saturday, November 2
nd against Indiana University Northwest at 3pm.
