Men’s Soccer Falls to Bethel in Overtime at NAIA Opening Round

MISHAWAKA, Ind. – The #17 ranked Indiana Tech men's soccer team took a trip northwest to #13 ranked Bethel University for the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round Saturday afternoon that saw a tight contest carry into overtime where the Warriors would fall 1-0 on a sudden death goal to the Pilots.

With both teams receiving a bye in the first round of the tournament, the Warriors and Pilots would meet in the second round on the campus of Bethel University. The winner would be heading to Wichita, Kansas for the final site games starting with the round of 16 on December 2nd. Weather would play a factor in the second round matchup, with a torn up, muddy grass field from the rain over the prior days. With a practice day on Friday the Warriors were able to get acclimated to the conditions and field compared to their usual turf field at home and it would help as Tech outshot Bethel in the first half of the game 5-2. However, in the second half, Bethel would start to take over the game, controlling the possession and shot chart. Neither team would be able to find a goal though with both goalkeepers playing well to keep their teams in it. David Martinez would make six of his seven total saves in the second half for the Warriors. After staying level at 0-0 for 90 minutes, the game would head to overtime, consisting of up to two ten minute sudden death periods. But the Pilots would need just over five minutes in overtime to finally find the winner, coming on a redirected ball following a cross into the box from a free kick. Alex Mihov would post a team high four shots and two on target, but the Warriors were unable to score in this one as they fall in a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to end their season.

The Warriors tournament run ends after just one game this year in their sixth straight appearance at the national tournament. Tech finishes the season with a 13-2-5 overall record, after going 9-0-3 in conference play to finish second overall in the standings for a third year in a row and would go on to win a sixth straight WHAC Tournament Championship this season.
