FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The #7 ranked Indiana Tech Women's Hockey team swept Penn State University this weekend in a two-game home series, tallying a total of 13 goals in two games. This moves their overall record to 13-4-1 and 9-1-0 in CCWHA play.
In game one, the Warriors struck first, opening the scoring at 13:45 of the first period when
Solange Basque scored assisted by
Mikayla Kalverda and
Halle Murray to take a 1-0 lead. Penn State tied the game at 8:13 with a power play goal, but just minutes later,
Megan Yakiwchuk put the Warriors ahead at 11:07 with help from
Arina Jusczak. Yakiwchuk got her second of the game at 12:32, finishing from
Izzy Pettem-Shand and
Hailey Terpstra to make it 3-1. The Warriors weren't finished yet as
Jaiden Rogers added an unassisted goal at 13:52, extending the lead to 4-1. In the third period, the Warriors continued to press their advantage. At 14:24,
Izzy Pettem-Shand found the net, assisted by
Halle Murray and
Hailey Terpstra, sealing a 5-1 win. Goaltender
Ashtyn Berthiaume played a total of 60 minutes and saved a total of 22 shots.
In game two, the Warriors wasted no time as
Mikayla Kalverda opened the scoring just 1:22 into the first period, assisted by
Izzy Pettem-Shand. Kalverda returned the favor moments later at 2:37, setting up
Dakota Bowler for INTECH's second goal. At 3:45,
Payton Gilmour buried a chance assisted by Pettem-Shand and
Megan Yakiwchuk to stretch the lead to 3-0. The Warriors capitalized on a power-play opportunity at 10:59, with
Georgia Kusbel scoring on a setup from Gilmour.
Halle Murray found the back of the net at 19:34, assisted by Yakiwchuk, to make it 5-0 by intermission in a dominant first period for the Warriors. The second period began with
Megan Yakiwchuk scoring at 2:42 assisted by
Halle Murray and Pettem-Shand.
Sylvie Legault scored her first career goal for Tech, adding an unassisted tally at 3:59, extending the lead to 7-0. At 13:05 in the third period,
Halle Murray scored her second goal of the game, with assists from Pettem-Shand—her fourth of the night—and
Ashley Episcopo, capping off a big 8-0 victory. Goaltender
Izzy Varner earned a shutout, playing a total of 60 minutes and saving 11 shots.
The Warriors are back in action after Christmas break hoping for another big sweep as they play Concordia University for a two-game series on Friday, January 10
th at 4pm at the SportONE/Parkview Icehouse in Fort Wayne (IN), and Saturday, January 11
th in Ann Arbor (MI).
