FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech women's lacrosse team kicked off their season on Wednesday afternoon with a home contest against NCAA D3 opponent Kalamazoo College (Mich.) where the Warriors would win the high scoring shootout 17-15.
The Warriors came out of the gate firing, taking a 5-3 lead in the first quarter. Freshman,
Michelle Farrell would score a hattrick in the first quarter of her Warrior debut, while
Brooke Buhr and
Faith Donally would also register goals in the period. After Tech would push the score to 7-3 early in the second quarter, the Hornets would change the script the rest of the way and into the third. Kalamazoo would score seven of the next eight goals to end the second quarter with a 10-8 lead. The Hornets would continue to pour it on in the third with three of the first four goals, bringing their lead up to four. The Warriors needed an answer and would get that through the combination of Donally and Buhr scoring two quick goals to narrow the gap, as Tech would trail 11-14 heading into the final quarter of play. Alexis DiGiovanni made a crucial decision to change goalies at the start of the fourth bringing in junior
Kat Hoff. Hoff would play outstanding in net, changing the momentum of the game in the Warriors favor. Both sides would pick up one goal as Tech would trail 12-15 with just over 12 minutes to play. Then the Orange & Black would go on a game clinching run, scoring the final five goals of the game to win it 17-15. Broke Buhr would lead the way for the Warriors with eight points on two goals and six assists and ten ground balls, while Donally (5G and 2A) and Farrell (4G and 3A) would pick up seven points each. Lauren Hainlin would also make an impact in her Warrior debut with a hattrick and one assist.
Da'zah Regusters would wreak havoc on Kalamazoo, causing five turnovers and picking up seven draw controls, while also picking up one goal and two assists in the game.
Sydney Oberdorfer would start in goal for the Warriors, making six saves through the first three quarters. Hoff would come in for the fourth quarter in relief, making three saves and picking up the win.
Indiana Tech will now get set for a daunting schedule as there next five opponents include three top seven teams and two receiving votes. The Warriors will head to Georgetown, Kentucky on February 24
th to play Georgetown College at 1pm.
