LEBANON, Tenn. – The Indiana Tech baseball team traveled to Lebanon, Tennessee, over the weekend for a three-game series against the Cumberland University Phoenix. In Saturday's doubleheader, the Warriors dropped both games, 2-6 in game one and 1-2 in game two. On Sunday, the Warriors fell 10-13 in the series' final game.
In game one, the Warriors struck first. After a scoreless first inning, Tech broke through in the top of the second as a sacrifice fly from
Jack Ferguson scored
Carson McNulty from third. Tech blanked the Phoenix in the bottom of the second and third innings, but the hosts finally got on the scoreboard with five runs in the fourth frame. Tech drew one back in the top of the fifth as a
Tristan Osika sac fly scored
Jack Ferguson. However, a long ball from the hosts in the bottom of the fifth put the game to rest.
In Friday's second game of the doubleheader, an intense pitcher's battle was in full effect. Once again, the Warriors were the ones to strike first. In the top of the second inning, a double from
Quinn Seefeldt saw
Patrick McGinn cross the plate for what would be the Warrior's lone run of the game. On the mound for the Warriors,
Zach Zaborowski threw 6 six scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out 11 of the 22 batters he faced. Unfortunately for the guests, a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh inning would spell disaster for the Orange and Black as Cumberland took game two 2-1.
Both offenses came alive on Sunday as 23 runs were scored between the two teams. The Phoenix started hot, putting up five runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early advantage. Tech struck back with two runs in the top of the second inning. A sac fly from
Brice Stultz scored
Patrick McGinn and advanced
Eli MacDonald to third, which would prove to be an important detail as MacDonald would score thanks to a balk by Cumberland's pitcher. The Warriors put up another two runs in the top of the third inning thanks to a pair of singles from
Carson McNulty and
Patrick McGinn. Tech drew level in the top of the fourth inning as
Luke Huerta found a hole in the left side of the infield to score Stultz. After blanking the hosts three straight frames, the Warriors took their first lead of the game with two more runs thanks to MacDonald's drive over the center field wall in the top of the fifth, scoring in the fourth straight frame. The lead was short-lived as the Phoenix drew level in the bottom of the fifth with two runs before retaking the lead in the bottom of the sixth. For the Warriors, MacDonald added another RBI to his tally as a sac fly scored
Parker Bates from third to knot the game at 8 in the top of the seventh inning. In the bottom of the eighth inning, the hosts' bats got hot, scoring five runs to retake the lead. In the top of the ninth, Tech drew two back thanks to MacDonald's second long ball of the day, but the visitors came up short, falling 10-13.
The Warriors are back in action on Saturday and Sunday as they travel to Campbellsville University for a three-game series against the Tigers.
