Warriors End CCWHA Tournament with Agonizing Defeat in Triple Overtime of Championship Game

BURTON, Mich. - The Indiana Tech Warriors Women's hockey team traveled to Burton, Michigan to play in the CCWHA D1 playoff championships this weekend. The Warriors faced off No. 9 University of Michigan in the semi finals and secured a win as they moved to the finals against their rivals No. 3 Adrian College. The Warriors unfortunately lost a long hard fought battle in the final game in triple overtime, and clinched a silver medal for the 3rd year in a row.

In game one against Michigan, the Warriors managed to find the back of the net late in the first period, scored by Dakota Bowler and assisted by Allison Greene and Genessie Williams. With the Warriors up by one, they continued to push hard as Dakota Bowler scored her second of the game early in the second period. Michelle Borland made it look easy scoring two breakaway goals in a row in the third period, making the final score 4-0 for the Warriors over the University of Michigan, sending Tech to the championship game. Goaltender Izzy Varner played a total of 60 minutes, saving 24 shots, as well as being named the most valuable player. 

In the championship game against Adrian, the Warriors came out on top in the first period as Allison Greene found the back of the net on a power play, assisted by Genessie Williams and Michelle Borland. Genessie Williams came out with a goal early in the second, assisted by Allison Greene and Michelle Borland putting Tech up 2-0 early in the second. The Adrian Bulldogs came back and secured two goals in the second period to tie the game 2-2. The battle of the third period ended with no scoring, so the game went to overtime to finalize the champions. After the 1st five minutes of overtime, both teams couldn't find a way to score, so the second period of overtime began. Both teams battled through exhaustion, but the score was still tied after the second five minute period of overtime. Finally, the third period of overtime began and the Adrian Bulldogs found a way to score as the Warriors would fall to the Bulldogs in triple overtime with a final of 3-2. Izzy Varner played a full 60 minutes plus 3 periods of overtime, saving 56 shots in goal.

The Warriors will have a few weeks off, but are now beginning to prepare for the biggest games of the year as they travel to St Louis, Missouri to compete in the 2024 ACHA National Championships from March 13-17.
