FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech men's volleyball hosted Cumberland University in their first home match of the 2024 season on Thursday evening in the Schaefer Center. Controlling the match right from the start, the Orange and Black took care of business against the Phoenix, winning 3-0. Rosenberg gets his first home win at the helm as the Warriors remain unbeaten in the early stages of their campaign at 4-0.
The Warriors started quickly, winning the race to 10 while on a 12-6 run to open the first set. While maintaining their momentum, the Warriors continued to press the Phoenix, as the pace of their play kept Cumberland off balance, leading to a 9-3 Warrior run to take the first set 25-13. The second set was evenly matched through the opening points as both teams searched for an advantage. For Tech, this came in the form of a 7-2 run sparked by a kill from
Austin Runyard, which gave them an 11-7 lead. The Orange and Black maintained their four-point lead for most of the match, but a threatening 3-0 run from Cumberland cut the Warrior lead to 20-19. Runyard capped off a 5-3 run with a kill to put the set to bed, winning 25-22. The third set shadowed the first as Tech once again got off to a quick start, opening on a 10-3 run. After trading almost every other point to the 18-13 mark, the Warriors took advantage of a Phoenix service error to kickstart another 7-2 run to claim the set 25-15 and the match 3-0.
Daynte Stewart led the Warrior attack with 12 kills, while
Mario Capo contributed 2 aces, and
Brandon Jones recorded a game-high 33 assists. Defensively,
Logan Gamero was an unmovable wall at the net, recording 6 blocks, while
Ben Rosenow led the back line with 8 digs.
Next up for the Warriors is the University of Rio Grande on Tuesday, February 13. The first serve in the Schaefer Center is set for 7:00 p.m.
