Warriors Advance to WHAC Final with Win Over Cornerstone

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 1 seeded Indiana Tech women's basketball team took one step closer to claiming the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Tournament title by downing the No. 4 seeded Cornerstone University Golden Eagles 61-40 on Friday evening at home in the Schaefer Center.

It wasn't the start the Orange and Black had prepared for, as the Golden Eagles were the ones to get out on the front foot early, starting the game on a 5-0 run. After nearly three and half scoreless minutes, head coach Jessie Biggs used her first timeout to get things right. It proved a productive timeout as the hosts closed the first quarter on a 12-2 run to grab the lead heading into the second quarter. The Warriors' defensive prowess continued in the second frame, limiting the Cornerstone offense to 20% shooting from the floor. Offensively, the Orange and Black struggled from beyond the three-point line, making just one of their eleven attempts, but their interior offense helped balloon their lead to fourteen, 29-15, going into the midway break.

In the opening five minutes of the second half, the Warrior's defense continued to smother the Golden Eagles, holding them to two points, which helped Tech take their first twenty-point lead of the game before taking a 45-24 lead into the fourth quarter. In the final frame, the two squads went step for step as both offenses poured in sixteen points on the way to a 61-40 final in favor of the Warriors.

Erika Foy led all scorers with seventeen points, eight boards, and three assists. Taylor Covington added twelve points, three rebounds, and two assists. Korryn Smith tallied ten points to round out the Warrior's double-digit scorers and added three rebounds and one assist.

With the win tonight, the Warriors await the winner of the other WHAC semifinal, the No.2 seed, Siena Heights, or the No. 3 seed, Concordia, for a Monday night showdown in the tournament final. Tip-off in the Schaefer Center is set for 6:00 p.m.
