Women’s Hockey Wins First Round Matchup but Falls in ACHA National Championship Quarterfinals

MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. – The Indiana Tech women's hockey team entered the ACHA National Championship Tournament as the No. 8 seed in the ten-team field. The Warriors would take down No. 5 seed Maryville University in the First Round before falling to No. 2 seed Midland University in the quarterfinals.

On Wednesday against Maryville, the two sides would play a scoreless first period as they got accustomed to the atmosphere of the national tournament. But, once the Warriors settled in, they would dominate. Hailey Hudder would score the opening goal for the Orange & Black midway through the second period, assisted by Megan Yakiwchuk and Dakota Bowler. Just two minutes later, Allison Greene would give the Warriors a 2-0 lead on a shot assisted by Michelle Borland and Genessie Williams. Six minutes into the third period, the same trio of Green, Borland, and Williams would link up to make it 3-0. Borland would score unassisted with just under four minutes to play to put the icing on the cake up 4-0. Maryville would find two late goals in the closing minutes to deny Izzy Varner and the Warriors a shutout, but Tech wouldn't care, advancing into the quarterfinal round. Varner would make 21 saves in goal for the Warriors in the win.

With only one day of rest between games, the Warriors knew they'd be up for a tough challenge against the rested No. 2 seed Midland University in the quarterfinal on Friday afternoon. Midland would get on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. In the second period, Midland would add a second goal, scoring on the powerplay to go up 2-0, but Tech would stay in the game scoring a late powerplay goal of their own from Izzy Pettem-Shand in the final minute of the period, assisted by Ashley Episcopo, to make it 2-1. However, the Warriors could not ride that momentum into the third as they failed to score in the period. Midland would get a goal early in the third period and add an empty netter at the end, going on to win it 4-1. Izzy Varner would make 28 saves as the Warriors season would come to a close in the quarterfinal round for the third year in a row.

Indiana Tech would finish the season at 20-12-1 overall and an 11-2 record in conference play. No. 2 seed Midland University will take on No. 3 seed Adrian College in the seminal round on Saturday, while No. 1 seed Liberty University and No. 4 seed Minot State University will face off in the other semifinal matchup. The ACHA Women's Hockey National Champion will be crowned on Sunday, March 17th.
