FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech baseball team kicked off their conference campaign on Saturday afternoon, hosting the Lawrence Tech Blue Devils for a doubleheader. An explosion of offense from the visitors saw the Blue Devils take the first game 15-4. Tech continued to struggle in game two, falling 6-11.
It was not an ideal start for the Orange and Black in the opening game of the doubleheader as the Blue Devils offense took advantage of the heavy winds early with back-to-back home runs from their two and three hitters in the top of the first inning. That accounted for two of the Blue Devils' four long balls in the game, while the hosts only had one.
Alex Watkins accounted for three of Tech's four RBIs with a base-clearing double, but the Blue Devils hot bats carried them through for a 15-4 victory.
After a scoreless two innings, it was the Blue Devils striking first in the nightcap with a double to right center on a perfectly executed hit and run, followed by a two-run shot over the left-center fence. The visitors didn't slow down, scoring another four runs in the top of the next inning courtesy of a three-run shot to left. Tech battled back with a four-spot of their own in the bottom of the seventh inning, highlighted by a two-RBI single by
Alex Smith, but ultimately came up short in their comeback effort, falling 11-6.
The Warriors are back in action on Sunday, traveling to Livonia, Michigan, for a conference doubleheader with the Madonna University Crusaders, starting at 1:00 p.m.
