SIOUX CITY, Iowa – It was déjà vu for the Indiana Tech women's basketball team as their postseason run came to an end at the hands of Briar Cliff University for the second straight season after a 78-52 loss to the Chargers in the NAIA Women's Basketball National Tournament round of sixteen on Friday evening in the Tyson Events Center.
The opening quarter was a battle as the two teams traded blows while searching for an opportunity to establish control of the game. Briar Cliff got things started with a bucket in the paint to take an early two-point lead, but that was the largest margin either team would possess until the Chargers took a 15-12 lead with the final field goal of the quarter. The second quarter continued to be evenly matched through the opening five minutes, with the Chargers maintaining most of the lead, but the Warriors did a good job keeping the game within reach. In the closing minutes of the first half, the Chargers began to extend their lead as they took their first double-digit lead, 33-23, with fifty seconds left before the halftime break.
The Chargers came out of the locker room, firing on all cylinders. Their offense was extremely efficient, shooting 75% from the field in the third quarter by dominating the paint. The seventh seed scored 18 of their 34 paint points in the third quarter and dominated the glass, outrebounding the Warriors 11-3. The few extra possessions the Chargers stole, along with the Warrior's offense shooting 33.3% from the floor, helped Briar Cliff outscore Tech 31-16 in the third and stretch their lead to 64-39 as the two sides headed into the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter was more evenly balanced in scoring, but the damage from the third quarter was insurmountable for the Warriors as they fell to the Chargers 78-52 to bring their season to a close.
Genevieve Decker led the team in scoring with 14 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists.
Juliana Burris was the only other Warrior to score in double figures with 13 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists.
Erika Foy added 8 points and 8 rebounds.
The Warriors wrapped up the season with an overall record of 30-4, winning 30 games for the fifth time since the 2016-17 season. The Warriors also finished undefeated at 22-0 in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference, claiming the regular season and tournament titles.
