FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech softball team dropped both games of their Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) doubleheader with the Madonna University Crusaders, 1-9 and 1-5, on Sunday afternoon at Warrior Park.
The series opener was a pitcher's battle early as both
Savannah Bravo for Tech and Maeson Schlaud for the Crusaders kept the opposing offense at bay through the first three innings. Madonna broke the deadlock with a double from Jessica Dunkel in the top of the fourth inning to secure their first run of the game. An inning later, the visitors added another two runs to their tally to extend their lead while holding the Warrior's offense stagnant. After the Crusaders added another run in the top of the sixth, the Warriors finally cracked the seal. With runners on first and third,
Maire Trouba took off for second, which forced a throw down by the Crusaders catcher. Although Trouba was caught stealing, the throw-down allowed
Kenadee Schnick to score from third to cut the visitor's lead to three. The Crusaders put the game to rest in the top of the seventh as they sent five runs across home to extend their lead to eight, blanking the Orange and Black in the bottom of the inning to secure the victory.
In game two, the Warriors got off to a better start, scoring in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a sacrifice fly from
Katie O'Drobinak, which scored Trouba from third. On the mound for the Warriors,
Jayme Koning held Madonna's offense scoreless for two innings. The bats came alive again for the Crusaders in the top of the third inning, as four hits helped the visitors take their first lead of game two, scoring three runs. Madonna added two more insurance runs in the top of the fifth inning as Maeson Schlaud continued to deal on the mound for the Crusaders, throwing her second complete game of the day and holding the Warriors to one run in both.
The Warriors move to 18-7 on the season and fall to 1-3 in conference play. The Warriors take a short break from conference play as they travel to Indianapolis for their next contest to take on No. 7 Marian University in a doubleheader on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
