FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech baseball team was back in action on Friday afternoon, hosting the Cleary University Cougars for a conference doubleheader. The Orange and Black stole both games from the Cougars, winning 8-7 and 11-4.
Grant Besser got the nod on the bump in the opener and came out firing, recording five of the first six outs as strikeouts and held the Cougars scoreless. Tech's bats came alive in the bottom of the second as they broke the stalemate with a two-RBI single from
Quinn Seefeldt. Seefeldt's single started a chain of hits as
Brice Stultz,
Ben Morrison, and
Luke Huerta hit back-to-back-to-back doubles, which all drove in a run as Tech took a 5-0 lead. After another scoreless inning, which included two more strikeouts from Besser, the Cougars finally crossed home in the top half of the fourth, scoring three runs. During Tech's turn at the plate in the fourth,
Brice Stultz accounted for the Warrior's lone run with a solo shot over the right field fence. Tech tallied one more run off a sac fly from
Eli MacDonald in the bottom of the fifth to grow their lead to four. Cleary made things interesting with a four spot in the top half of the sixth inning, blanking the Warriors in the bottom half and knotting the game at seven with one inning to go.
Kade Robinson kept the Cougar's offense dormant in the top of the seventh, setting the stage for the Warriors. Down to their last out,
Nick Miller drew a walk, and
Eli MacDonald got a base hit, which brought
Parker Bates to the plate. With two outs and two ducks on the pond, Bates came up clutch with a double to the right field wall, which scored the runner from second and took game one 8-7.
Ryan Uhlenhake would start game two on the mound for the Warriors, throwing with some fire to start. The first eight Cleary outs would all come by the way of strikeout from Uhlenhake as he would finish with 11 in his five innings of work.
Tyler Stahl would hit a two-run bomb to right field in the bottom of the first to put the Warriors up 2-1. After the Cougars took a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth, the Warriors would turn up the offense scoring nine runs over the next three innings, highlighted by
Alex Watkins' bases loaded clearing double to left center, take game two 11-4.
Luke Huerta,
Eli MacDonald, and Stahl would all record two hit, two RBI games, with Stahl reaching base four times and scoring three times.
Matt McKeon would pick up the win for Tech, going three innings with one strikeout.
Seth Leininger would wrap up the pair of wins for the Orange & Black, pitching a one inning, one strikeout shutout in the ninth.
With the sweep, the Warriors improve to 9-17 overall on the season and 6-4 in WHAC play. Tech will travel to Rochester Hills, Michigan tomorrow to take on Rochester University in a WHAC doubleheader starting at 1pm.
