FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech men's volleyball team returned home after five road games to host the Cornerstone University Golden Eagles for Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) action on Friday evening in the Schaefer Center. The Golden Eagles avenged their loss to the Orange and Black earlier this season with a thrilling 3-2 win over Tech to split the season series.
The Warriors came out hot, taking a 5-1 lead in the early stages of the first set. After trading a few points, the Warriors went on a 9-2 run sparked by a kill from
Mason Milan that stretched the lead to 18-8 and put the set out of reach, winning 25-16. In set two, the two sides went point for point through the opening ten points. A three-point run from the visitors gave them their largest lead of the set, but Tech answered quickly with a 6-0 run to retake the lead. Trailing 22-17, the Golden Eagles stormed back with a 7-0 run to take a 24-22 lead. Tech cut the deficit to one, but Cornerstone held on to take the second set 25-23. The third set was tight through the early going again, but leading 11-10, the Orange and Black stringed together short runs that were capped off with a 4-0 run to establish a six-point lead. A few points later, a kill from
Dylan Poore sealed the 25-18 set win for the Warriors.
The fourth set was a battle from start to finish, as the Warriors took an early 10-6 lead, immediately followed by a 5-0 run from the visitors to take the advantage. The two sides continued to go toe-to-toe, but Tech was able to narrowly steal an advantage, leading 24-22. However, cornerstone refused to back down as they leveled the game at 24, shifting the momentum in favor of the Golden Eagles, taking the set 28-26 and forcing the fifth. In the fifth set, Cornerstone opened the scoring with two straight points, followed by two consecutive points from the hosts. After going back and forth, the Warriors came up just short as the visitors took the set 15-13 to claim the match.
Next up for Tech is the Aquinas College Saints at home on Saturday afternoon, beginning at 3:00 p.m. in the Schaefer Center.
