FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech baseball team welcomed Aquinas College to Fort Wayne for a four-game series over the weekend, with a doubleheader being played on both Saturday and Sunday. The sides split the games on Saturday, with Tech taking game one 7-1 and Aquinas winning game two 11-3. Tech took both ends of the clash on Sunday, winning 7-0 in game one and 9-7 in game two.
The Saints struck first in the series opener. After a scoreless first inning, the visitors plated a run to grab an early lead. Tech responded in the third inning with three runs off an RBI double from
Tyler Stahl and a two-run home run from
Eli MacDonald.
Jack Ferguson picked up an RBI while pinch-hitting in the fifth as he sent a ball off the top of the wall in center field for a double to score MacDonald. Tech added three more runs in the sixth for good measure. It was
Parker Bates with the two RBI hit this time, scoring
Quinn Seefeldt and
Tyler Stahl.
Zach Zaborowski earned the win on the bump, throwing the complete seven innings. He allowed just two hits and one run, walked two, and struck out ten.
Despite the Warriors plating the first run of the game off a long ball from
Jack Ferguson in the bottom of the second inning, the Warriors' offense struggled to score runs in game two of the series. On the other hand, Aquinas' offense came alive, starting with two runs in the third and fourth innings to take the lead from Tech. The Orange and Black pulled one run back in the sixth, but the Saints scored four in the seventh and three in the eighth on their way to an 11-3 win to split Saturday's doubleheader.
The Warriors wasted no time getting on the board in game three as
Eli MacDonald and
Parker Bates both picked up RBI singles in the bottom of the first inning to put the Warriors up 2-0. The Warriors stretched their lead to 5-0 with three runs in the third and continued to watch it grow with a run in each of the fourth and sixth innings.
Grant Besser shut down the Saints offense, throwing four innings in which he allowed two hits and struck out seven of the fourteen batters he faced.
Seth Leininger came in to relieve Besser in the fifth, throwing three innings while allowing one hit and struck out one.
Patrick McGinn led the Warriors in hits with three in three at-bats, while
Christian Mojica and Bates led the side in RBIs with two apiece.
The final game of the series got off to a slow start as both sides were scoreless after three innings. Things looked bleak for the Warriors in fourth as the Saints brought home five runs to take the lead.
Quinn Seefeldt finally got the Warriors on the board in the fifth inning with an RBI ground out, scoring
Keelan Dunkle from third. After a scoreless sixth inning, the Warrior's offense came to life in the seventh inning, scoring six runs, four of which came from a grand slam by
Eli MacDonald, giving the Orange and Black their first lead. The Saints responded quickly with two runs in the top of the eight to knot the game at seven. Down to their final out with a runner on first,
Brice Stultz stepped up with a clutch at-bat, sending a deep ball over the right field fence for a walk-off two-run home run.
The Warriors wrap up the regular season in their next series, hosting Cornerstone for four games on Friday and Saturday. Game one of the doubleheaders will begin at 1:00 p.m. on both days.
