FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech softball team was back in action at home on Sunday afternoon as they hosted WHAC foe Cleary University for a doubleheader at Warriors Park. After splitting with the Racers on Saturday, Tech again split the doubleheader, this time with the Cougars on Sunday, winning 3-2 in the opener and falling 5-6 in game two.
After a scoreless first inning, back-to-back doubles broke the knot and gave the visitors a 1-0 lead. The Warriors were held hitless through the first three frames, but
Brooke Hughes ended the no-hitter with a single to left. Later in the third,
Jayme Koning leveled the game with a sacrifice fly that scored
Kenadee Schnick from third. The tie was short-lived as the Cougars retook the lead in their half of the fifth inning. Tech immediately responded, with two runs in the bottom of the fifth as
Amanda Parker scored on a passed ball and
Kennedi Sullivan knocked a double to the gap in left field, which scored
Maire Trouba.
Jayme Koning held the Cougars scoreless in the sixth to earn the win as
Savannah Bravo came in to pitch the final inning and earn the save.
Game two was a scoreless affair through the first two frames, but the Cougars once again broke the deadlock with an RBI double in the top of the third. Once the seal was broken, the offenses kept scoring as Tech leveled the game again in the bottom of the third inning.
Allie Forster got into scoring position with a triple to right and later scored on a sac fly from
Maire Trouba. The Cougar's offense had a big inning in the fourth as they plated four runs to retake the lead. Tech grabbed one run back in the bottom half of the fourth as
Katie O'Drobinak picked up an RBI with a hit up the middle. The Cougars again took a four-run lead as they scored another run in the top half of the fifth.
Kyla Collins came in to pinch hit in the bottom of the fifth and did her job as she drove in a run to pull one back on the Cougars. Bravo gave the Warriors a chance by holding the Cougars offense scoreless in the final two frames. Tech cut the visitor's lead to one run as Trouba hit a two-RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, but the comeback effort came up short as Cleary blanked the Warriors in the final inning to hold on and win 6-5.
The Warriors travel to Rochester Hills, Michigan, for their next contest. Taking on Rochester Christian University, starting at 2:00 p.m.
