UPLAND, Ind. – The Indiana Tech baseball team began their NAIA National Tournament run in the first game of the Upland Bracket, hosted by Taylor University, by facing off against the Indiana University Southeast Grenadiers. The Warriors were victim to a miraculous comeback as the Grenadiers came out on top 14-11.
The Orange and Black got off to a quick start, plating one run in each of the first two innings to lead 2-0 after two. After a scoreless third inning, Tech put up four runs in the fourth to swell their lead to six.
Grant Besser continued to shut down the Grenadiers' offense through the first six innings, during which time the Warriors had added another three runs to lead 9-0. Tech took a double-digit lead in the top of the seventh inning, which was quickly cut back to nine runs as IUSE scored their first run of the game in the bottom half of the inning. The eighth inning played out just like the seventh, with both teams scoring one run and Tech holding an 11-2 lead going into the final inning. In the bottom of the ninth, with two outs, the Grenadiers did the impossible, scoring twelve runs, including a three-run walk-off home run to complete the comeback and win 14-11 over the Warriors.
Patrick McGinn led the Warriors offense with three hits in four at-bats and three RBIs.
The Warriors will play in game four of the bracket tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. and await the loser of the second game in the Upland Bracket between Taylor University and MidAmerican Nazarene.
