UPLAND, Ind. – After falling in their opening game, the Warriors rallied back to grab a win over MidAmerica Nazarene University in their second game of the NAIA National Championship Opening Round, hosted by Taylor University in Upland, Indiana. It took the Orange and Black one extra inning, but Tech got it done with an 8-7 victory to stay in the tournament.
The Pioneers struck first, scoring via a two-run home run in the top of the first inning, putting the Warriors on their heels. The Warriors finally broke the seal in the fourth as
Jack Ferguson hit a groundball to second base, which was enough to score
Patrick McGinn from third. Tech rattled off another three runs in the fourth to grab their first lead of the ballgame. Noah Castillo leveled the score for the Pioneers in the top half of the fifth inning with his second two-run home run of the game. Tech quickly responded with a run in the bottom half of the fifth to re-establish their lead. After a scoreless sixth inning, the Pioneers tallied one run in the seventh, while Tech continued to be one step ahead, scoring two runs to maintain a 7-5 lead. MNU added one run in both the eighth and ninth innings while keeping the Warriors off the scoreboard to knot the games at seven and force extra innings. With one out in the bottom of the tenth,
Brice Stultz stepped into the box and, for the third time this season, ended the game with a long ball over the right field fence.
Coley Stevens picked up the win on the mound for the Warriors, throwing two innings, allowing zero hits and zero runs, walking none, and striking out two.
Patrick McGinn led the Warriors in hits with three in five at-bats, while
Christian Mojica,
Jack Ferguson, and
Alex Watkins led the side with two RBIs.
The Warriors will face Missouri Baptist for their next game tomorrow, Wednesday, May 15, at 3:30 p.m.
