FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The #20 ranked Indiana Tech men's hockey team, fresh off two straight ties that ended in shootouts, travelled to Allen Park, Michigan on Thursday night where they defeated the University of Michigan-Dearborn 6-1 before coming back home to take down the Wolverines 3-2 in overtime on Saturday night with
Joey Mocnik scoring the game winner.
On Thursday night, the Warriors offense was rolling early as they scored four goals in the first period.
Malik Ali scored just over three minutes into the game, assisted by
Ryan Doucette and
Mason Bazaluk.
Francesco Santaniello scored a few minutes later from
Austin Sawyer. Michigan-Dearborn would then draw within one on a powerplay goal midway through the period, but Tech would score on their own powerplay two minutes later to make it 3-1.
Aidan Dufort would assist Bazaluk on the goal.
Nikita Ivasenko extended the Warriors lead to three on an assist from
Maksym Maiuk with just under seven minutes to play in the first. In the second period, Ali would score his second of the game on an assist from
Zane Myler to make it 5-1. Bazaluk would pick up his second goal as well midway through the third period from Doucette and Maiuk as the Warriors would win it 6-1 on the road.
Gage Reimer earned the win in goal for the Warriors, making 30 saves.
With a rare day off between games, Tech would take to the ice again on Saturday night at the PSM Icehouse in Fort Wayne, Indiana. In a tightly contested first period,
Austin Sawyer would make the breakthrough in the closing seconds of the first period to make it 1-0 Indiana Tech, assisted by
Aidan Dufort and
Francesco Santaniello. Michigan-Dearborn would tie the game early in the second period and the score would remain 1-1 heading into the third period. The Wolverines would strike again under three minutes into the third, but the Warriors would capitalize on the power play four minutes later to tie the game at two apiece.
Ryan Doucette would be the goal scorer, while Dufort and
Isaiah Gagerman picked up assists. With the score tied at two at the end of regulation, the game would head to overtime where Tech's
Joey Mocnik would be the hero, scoring 2:28 into the period to deliver the Warriors the 3-2 win and the series sweep. Dufort picked up his third assist of the game on the game winner with
Mason Bazaluk also assisting on the goal.
Gage Reimer played the full 62:28 in goal for the Orange & Black, making 23 saves in the win.
The Warriors are now 5-3-2 overall on the season and 4-0-2 in WHAC play. Tech will play Lawrence Tech in their next series at home on Friday, November 7
th at 7:30 pm and on the road Saturday, November 8
th in Redford, Michigan at 8pm.
