FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 17 ranked Indiana Tech men's soccer team hosted the No. 25 ranked University of Northwestern Ohio in the two-vs-three WHAC Tournament matchup on Saturday afternoon that was always going to be a tightly contested game between two big time rivals. In a game that looked destined for extra time,
Filip Maksimovic's heroics in the 87
th minute would propel the Warriors to a 1-0 victory, sending them to an eighth straight WHAC Tournament Championship game.
The game would start fast as both teams looked for a spot in the final. The Warriors would have more of the possession in the first half, but scoring opportunities came at a premium for both sides with very few chances.
Liam Arthur would get a header on goal in the 8
th minute for the first chance of the day, but UNOH's keeper would make the save. Tech's goalkeeper,
Cuba Grant, would be tested in the 12
th minute with a shot that he would save to deny the Racers. Each team would register just one more shot in the half, both coming in the final ten minutes, but the game would stay level at zero at halftime. In the second half, both sides would exchange shots early before UNOH started to get a foothold in the game, capitalizing in transition. The Racers would come close in the 68
th minute, hitting the post with the best chance of the day but the game remained 0-0. Tech would use this fortunate bounce to their advantage and take over the momentum, as the Warriors turned it up during the final 20 minutes. Tech would register two shots over the next few minutes to keep on the pressure. Then in the closing minutes of regulation,
Gui Moreira took the ball down the left side and sent the ball across the box to
Filip Maksimovic where he would make no mistake in putting the ball into the back of the net for the go-ahead goal in the 87
th minute of the game. The Warriors wouldn't give the Racers another chance over the final three minutes, holding on for an emphatic 1-0 victory! Grant would finish with two saves in the win, while Maksimovic and Moreira picked up the points on the goal.
The Warriors are now 15-4-1 overall and head to the WHAC Tournament Final for an eighth straight season, as they look for a seventh straight tournament title. Tech will play No. 15 ranked and No. 1 seeded Madonna University on Wednesday, November 12
th in Livonia, Michigan.
