FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The #7 ranked Indiana Tech women's hockey team swept the University of Rhode Island this past weekend in a two-game series winning 8-1 on Friday night and 4-1 on Saturday night celebrating their seniors. The Warriors would honor 11 seniors representing the first inaugural class of women's hockey program history, including
Hailey Anderson,
Lauren Younker,
Izzy Pettem-Shand,
Mikayla Kalverda,
Megan Yakiwchuk,
Ashley Episcopo,
Jaiden Rogers,
Izzy Varner,
Dakota Bowler,
Georgia Kusbel, and
Arina Jusczak.
In game one, the scoring opened early in the first period, with Indiana Tech's
Hailey Anderson finding the net unassisted at 2:31. Just under two minutes later,
Hailey Terpstra capitalized on a short-handed opportunity with an assist from
Mikayla Kalverda to extend the lead to 2-0.
Izzy Pettem-Shand closed out the first period with a last-second goal, assisted by
Dakota Bowler, making it 3-0. The Warriors kept the pressure on in the second period, adding five more goals.
Haylee Grenier scored on the power play at 8:10, with assists from
Payton Gilmour and
Arina Jusczak. Moments later,
Allison Greene found the back of the net, assisted by
Ashley Episcopo and
Hailey Anderson.
Dakota Bowler followed up with a goal at 14:53, the 150th of her career, with Anderson and Episcopo collecting their second assists of the night.
Georgia Kusbel and
Lauren Younker each scored in the final minutes of the period, bringing the score to 8-0. Rhode Island managed to break the shutout in the third period, scoring at 17:22, but the Warriors secured the 8-1 win. Goaltender
Ashtyn Berthiaume played a total of 60 minutes, saving 16 shots.
In game two, the action started in the first period with
Megan Yakiwchuk opening the scoring at 8:09, assisted by
Hailey Terpstra. Just 17 seconds later,
Halle Murray doubled the lead with help from
Carys Wytinck and
Mikayla Kalverda, giving the Warriors a quick 2-0 advantage. In the second period, Yakiwchuk struck again at 11:27, this time unassisted, to extend the lead to 3-0.
Hailey Terpstra sealed the victory early in the third period, scoring unassisted at 1:47 to make it 4-0. Rhode Island managed to get on the scoreboard late in the third on a power-play goal, but the Warriors secured the 4-1 win on their senior night, finishing their last home game of the season out strong. Izzy Varner played her last home game as a Warrior playing all 60 minutes and saving a total of 18 shots.
The Warriors finish the regular season at 19-9-2 overall and 9-5-0 in CCWHA play. They will have a quick turnaround as they play their CCWHA tournament this upcoming weekend, with their first game against Davenport Thursday, February 20th at 4:30 pm at the Eddie Edgar Ice Arena in Livonia, Michigan. If they win, they will play at the same place Friday, February 21st against Michigan Dearborn, and if they keep winning, they will play through to the semi-finals and championships on Saturday and Sunday.
