FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The #9 Indiana Tech women's lacrosse team hosted #5 Lawrence Tech University (Mich.) on Wednesday evening in a huge conference battle and potential early title decider between the two top ten teams. Tonight, the Warriors would finally get their revenge on the Blue Devils with a thrilling 15-12 come from behind win in the game of the season so far.
In recent years, Lawrence Tech has dominated this rivalry, winning the last six matchups. The Blue Devils have turned into a national powerhouse over the past three seasons with three straight WHAC regular season titles and four straight WHAC Tournament titles, as well as a NAIA National Championship in 2023. LTU has defeated the Warriors in both the regular season and the WHAC Tournament in each of the last three seasons with the Warriors last win against the Blue Devils coming in 2019, making today's win extra special for the Warriors.
The game would start out in the Blue Devils favor as they took an early 3-0 lead before
Noelle Ricci got the Warriors on the board with four minutes remaining in the first quarter. Ricci would strike again just under two minutes to go, sandwiched between two LTU goals as the Orange & Black would be down 2-5 after 15 minutes. LTU would start the second quarter with two of the first three goals to take a 7-3 lead midway through the period. The Warriors would start to gain some momentum at the end of the half closing on a 3-0 run to cut the deficit to just one before the break. Tech would carry that momentum right into the second half as
Michelle Farrell and
Kylie King would both score in the opening minute of the third quarter to give the Warriors their first lead of the game at 8-7. LTU would tie it up moments later, but
Lauren Hainlin would score a pair to give the Warriors a 10-8 lead. After LTU made it 9-10 at the 5:21 mark, the Warriors would go on another big run to close the quarter ending with Ricci's third goal of the game with 56 seconds left to go to make it 13-9 Indiana Tech. Hainlin would score her fourth goal of the game to open the fourth quarter, extending the Warrior lead to five. Lawrence Tech would close the game on a 3-1 run, but it would be too little too late, as the Warriors would hang on and upset the #5 ranked Blue Devils 15-12.
Michelle Farrell would lead the Warriors with six points on two goals and four assists, as well as seven ground balls, and six draw controls.
Noelle Ricci and
Lauren Hainlin would both finish with five points on four goals and one assist, while
Lexi Gallini would cause three turnovers.
Kat Hoff would be massive in goal for the Warriors, making 15 huge saves to help the Warriors to victory.
After the win, the Warriors improve to 4-2 overall on the season and 2-0 in conference play. They will play their next game on the road in Rochester Hills, Michigan when they battle Rochester Christian University on Saturday, March 22nd at 2pm.
