FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech baseball team wrapped up the regular season with a conference doubleheader against Aquinas College on Sunday afternoon, celebrating their senior day. Tech won game one of the meeting 10-2 and walked off game two 8-5.
The Warriors were hot to start game one, as two home runs in the frame would drive in four runs. In the second, the Warriors offense stayed hot, plating three more runs to lead 7-0 after two. The Saints broke through in the third, scoring one run. In the fourth, the Orange and Black added three more to their tally, leading 10-1. The visitors would add one more run in the fifth, but the Warrior pitching staff would shut things down in the final two innings to win 10-2.
Jordan Malott and
Jack Ferguson led the side with two hits each, while Malott drove in five runs and Ferguson brought in three.
Austin Byford picked up the win on the mound, throwing 4.1 innings. He allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits, walked one, and struck out three of the 20 batters he faced.
In game two, the Saints got on the board first, scoring one run in each of the first two innings. Tech answered in the bottom of the second, scoring two runs in the frame, leveling the score at two after two. In the top of the third, the Saints retook the lead with a three-spot in the frame. Tech would cut into the lead in the bottom of the third, as they brought in one more run, trailing 5-3 after three. After three scoreless innings, the Warriors got on the board again with one run in the seventh to cut the Saints' lead to one. Scoring for the second straight inning, the Orange and Black drove in one more run in the eighth, leveling the score 5-5. After shutting down the Saints' offense in the top half of the inning with a clutch relay from centerfield to get the go-ahead run at the plate, the Warriors would win in dramatic fashion as
Jordan Malott would send a towering three-run shot over the left field wall, completing the comeback.
Tech finishes the season with a 31-18 record and lands in third place in the conference standings with a 20-8 record. Tech will return to action on Wednesday for game one of the WHAC Conference Tournament in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
