SYLVANIA, Ohio – The Indiana Tech softball team began postseason play today with day one if the WHAC Tournament getting underway at Pacesetter Park in Sylvania, Ohio. The Warriors are the #4 seed in the tournament and drew a quarterfinal round matchup with #5 seed Concordia University.
The Warriors would get on the board early against the Cardinals when
Bella Brock earned a walk and then
Kiersten Delaney cranked a two-run home run in the first inning to make it 2-0. Concordia would also homer in the game with a solo shot in the third inning to cut the Warrior lead in half. However, the Warriors pitching would be stellar throughout the game, not allowing another run.
Mallory Stinson would start the game and pick up the win, throwing 2.0 innings, allowing three hits and one run.
Carlye Walter would relive Stinson in the third inning and was untouchable in the circle. The sophomore would go 5.0 innings without giving up a hit and threw five strikeouts, helping Tech seal the 2-1 victory.
With the win, the Warriors would advance to the semifinal round and would face top seeded and NAIA #9 Madonna University. Tech would get off to another good start in this one as
Maire Trouba started the game with a leadoff home run to centerfield to make it 1-0. But Madonna would answer with a homer of their own and an RBI triple in the first inning to go up 2-1. Moving into the second inning,
Melissa Cabrera would lead off the inning with another solo home run as she tied the game at two. Madonna regained the lead, scoring three runs over the next three innings as the Crusaders led 5-2 after five innings of play. The home run fest continued in the top of the sixth inning as Cabrera smashed her second homer of the game, this one a two-run blast to centerfield.
Rhiannon McKay would score on the play as Tech trailed 4-5 heading into the bottom half of the inning. Madonna would add some insurance runs in the sixth and the Warriors would be unable to add any runs in the seventh, as Tech would fall 4-8 in the end.
Savannah Bravo would pick up the loss, finishing with 6.0 innings pitched, 13 hits and eight runs allowed.
Tech now drops into the loser's bracket and will face #7 seed Aquinas College in an elimination game at 4pm. The winner will play a second game at 6:30pm in another elimination game.
