FORT WAYNE, Ind. — It was a Homecoming to remember for Indiana Tech women's ice hockey. The Warriors delivered an exciting comeback Friday night at PSM Icehouse, rallying from behind to defeat Grand Valley State 4-2 in front of a fired-up home crowd.
Grand Valley State struck first just 1:06 into the game, but Indiana Tech quickly settled in and answered at 11:47.
Halle Murray buried her second goal of the season, with
Avery Johnson and
Keisha McLeod picking up the assists. The two teams battled back and forth through the remainder of the opening period, heading into the intermission tied at 1-1.
The second period featured relentless action from both sides, but neither team could break through. With the game still tied, the Warriors entered the third period ready to make their move. Grand Valley State regained the lead at 4:21, but Indiana Tech refused to back down.
The Warriors turned up the pressure and erupted for three goals in the final period. At 8:39,
Payton Gilmour tied the game with a power-play goal, assisted by Murray. Just over seven minutes later, Johnson gave Indiana Tech its first lead of the night, scoring short-handed with Murray once again picking up the assist.
With the crowd behind them and the clock winding down, Gilmour put the finishing touch on the comeback. Gilmour found the empty net with just eight seconds remaining, sending the Warriors into celebration and sealing the 4-2 Homecoming victory.
In net,
Ashtyn Berthiaume stood tall for all 60 minutes, stopping 23 of 25 shots to earn the victory. The Warriors also capitalized on the power play, going 1-for-7 while holding Grand Valley State scoreless on four opportunities. A three-goal third period, a comeback victory and a Homecoming celebration made for an unforgettable night at PSM Icehouse as the Warriors continue to build momentum. The Warriors hit the road tomorrow to play Grand Valley State University on their home ice at 3 PM in Hudsonville, Michigan.
