ALLENDALE, Mich. — The Indiana Tech women's ice hockey team made it back-to-back wins over Grand Valley State, earning a hard-fought 2-1 victory Saturday afternoon to complete the weekend sweep.
The Warriors came out firing in the opening period, striking just 1:38 into the game when
Keisha McLeod found the back of the net to give Indiana Tech an early lead. Grand Valley State answered just 25 seconds later to even the score, setting up an exciting opening frame.
Indiana Tech continued to push offensively and found the go-ahead goal with just 22 seconds remaining in the first period.
Kaitlyn Broeckel delivered the game-winning goal at 19:38, with Syvlie Legault and
Emily Harty picking up the assists.
From there, the Warriors locked in defensively, holding the Lakers scoreless through the final two periods to protect their lead and secure the victory. Both teams battled throughout the remainder of the contest, but Indiana Tech never gave up its advantage.
In net,
Ashtyn Berthiaume came up big for the Warriors, stopping 29 of 30 shots across all 60 minutes to earn the win. Indiana Tech also outshot Grand Valley State 38-30, including a strong 17-shot second period.
With Saturday's victory, the Warriors completed a weekend sweep of Grand Valley State, following Friday night's exciting 4-2 Homecoming win. Indiana Tech now carries back-to-back victories into its next contest verse Michigan State University on October 9th at 7:30pm in Fort Wayne.
