Men’s Lacrosse Falls in Final Seconds to No. 3 Aquinas in Instant Classic

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The #7 ranked Indiana Tech men's lacrosse team hosted the #3 ranked Aquinas Saints in a pivotal WHAC contest that came down to the wire in the final seconds on Wednesday night.

The Warriors would score first in the game on an unassisted goal by Jake Deacon, however Aquinas would immediately equalize just ten seconds later and then add a second goal 41 seconds after that to go up 2-1. The Saints would add a third before the Warriors stormed back with three straight goals to regain the lead at 4-3. Aquinas would again equalize to tie the game at four goals apiece after one quarter of play. In the second quarter, Tech would fall behind after being shut out over the 15-minute period. Aquinas would capitalize on a strong defensive quarter and score three times to lead 7-4 at halftime. Defense would take over again in the third quarter as each team only managed to score one goal as Aquinas held a three-goal lead heading into the fourth. Deacon would open the scoring in the period and Torben Aagaard would find the back of the net to bring Tech within one. The Saints got an insurance goal to go up two at the ten-minute mark, but Deacon would continue his strong day and score again minutes later to make it 8-9. Collin Howard scored on an assist from Cam Fewster with 2:02 left to play to tie the game at nine in the final minutes. The Warriors won the ensuing faceoff and had three shots over the next minute to play trying to find a winner, but Joey Meier's shot would be saved at the 1:09 minute mark as Aquinas took over possession. And with ten seconds left, the Saints would find the back of the net to crush the Warriors comeback. Tech wouldn't see the ball again as the clock ran out, falling 9-10 in an instant classic. Deacon led the way for Tech with five points, scoring four goals and adding one assist, while Fewster had three points (1 G, 2 A). Simon Watson had three caused turnovers and two ground balls, while Zach Spisz had five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Despite the loss, Sam Park had a stellar game in goal, making 16 saves for a .615 save percentage.

The Warriors now fall to 6-4 overall and 4-2 in WHAC play. Up next, Tech will hit the road to play #8 ranked University of the Cumberlands in another top ten matchup on Saturday, April 4th in Williamsburg, Kentucky at 12pm.
