FORT WAYNE, Ind. –The Indiana Tech women's tennis team made program history on Sunday, defeating Trine for the first time ever, 8-0. The Warriors improve to 1-1 on the season while Trine falls to 1-1.
Tech got off to an outstanding start as the Warriors swept doubles as
Raquel Manzoni and
Ana Hernandez defeated Jessica Huhnke and Bailey Denton at No. 1, 8-6 while at No. 2 doubles Barbara Oliveria and Stephanie Perez downed Christina Uphaus and Lauren Schleuter 8-4. The duo of Mounia Sami and
Anabell Cordero also won their match over Alexis Mack and Erin Kwaske, 8-5, giving the Orange and Black the 3-0 lead.
The Warriors also swept singles competition as Hernandez defeated Denton 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 and Sami won over Uphaus 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3. Perez won No. 4 singles 6-0-61 over Kwaske and Cordero eefeated Schlueter 7-5, 6-1 for the 7-0 lead. Morrell then defeated Mack 8-6 to win the dual 8-0.
It was a landmark win for the Warriors who had been defeated a combined 14-2 in the previous two meetings.
The Warriors will look to carry the momentum from their first victory over the Thunder into the ITA Regional Tournament this weekend Sept. 13-15 in Grand Rapids, Mich.
