FORT WAYNE, Ind. – In a game that featured 57 fouls and 73 free throws, the Indiana Tech women's basketball team came out on top, winning their second consecutive Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference contest, 58-82 over Lawrence Tech at the Schaefer Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Warriors (2-4, 2-0 WHAC) set the tone early as
Taylor Seiss converted a turnover into two points and
Linsey Masnari scored inside for an early 4-0 lead. Tech scored 12 of the first 16 points for an eight-point advantage, eventually pushing the lead to a high-mark of 12, 31-19, on a
Rayana Villalpando jumper at the 8:59 mark. The Blue Devils (1-3, 0-1 WHAC) got as close a six points, but the Warriors maintained their advantage, taking a 50-43 lead into the break.
The Orange and Black continued their hot shooting, converting 15-of-25 (60%) shots in the half including a 3-for-6 (50%) effort from behind the three-point arc while also sinking 17-of-23 (73.95) free throws. The defense limited LTU to 41.2 percent (14-for-34) shooting, a 6-for-11 (54.5%) mark from long range and allowed just 18 free throws, of which the Blue Devils made nine.
Tech went cold in the second half and the visitors took advantage, opening the half on a 13-3 run to take their first lead of the game, 56-54. A Seiss three-pointer ended the run and gave the Warriors the lead for good. An 11-4 run followed the Seiss basket to give Tech a six-point lead with 13:24 to play. The Blue Devils cut the lead to one thanks to an 8-2 run, scoring all eight points at the free throw line. After trading baskets and getting to within one twice more, until an 8-3 run by the Warriors pushed the lead back to six, 80-74 with 4:40 to play. The Blue Devils didn't go away, getting to within one-point with 34 seconds to play but the Warriors converted their free throws down the stretch to seals the win.
Despite shooting 35.3 percent (12-for-34) from the field in the second half the Warriors finished the game above 43 percent for the third time this season, sinking 27-of-59 (45.8%) shots in the game, going 7-for-16 (43.8%) from long distance and 24-for-34 (70.6%) from the charity stripe.
Masnari led all scorers with 22 points while also grabbing a game-high eight rebounds. Seiss added 19 points with
Baylee Rinehart pouring in 14.
Shallante Clements continued to play big inside, pulling down eight boards.
The Warriors look to make it three-in-a-row when they close out their three-game home stand against #16 Siena Heights on Wednesday, Nov. 19 at 5:30 p.m. in the Schaefer Center.
