ROCKLIN, Calif. – Despite a career-high 13 rebounds and second double-double from
Nikki Grose, the Indiana Tech women's basketball team fell to San Diego Christian 69-62 in overtime at Warrior Arena to conclude the William Jessup Classic on Saturday.
The opening nine minutes set the table for an intense contest as there were three ties and seven lead changes. The Hawks (3-4) got on the board first, scoring on the first possession of the game but
Baylee Rinehart evened the score with the Warriors (4-7) first basket. After trading scores,
Linsey Masnari followed a Rinehart layup with one of her own to give Tech their first lead. A three-pointer put the Hawks back in front, but
Taylor Seiss answered with a trey of her own to give the Orange and Black a one-point advantage.
Tech led twice more in the opening nine minutes, but after taking a 16-15 lead, SDC used a 12-0 run to take an 11-point lead with 5:46 left in the half. The Warriors didn't fold, using a 7-0 run, with all seven being scored by Seiss, to cut the deficit to four. San Diego Christian scored two of the final three points to take a 29-24 lead into the break.
The Hawks opened the second half on a 12-8 run to take a nine point lead, but Tech answered with an 11-2 run to tie the score at 43. The Hawks took a 51-45 lead with 5:23 to play, but a 10-2 run by Tech, capped by a
Shallante Clements tip-in, gave the Warriors their first lead of the half with 35 second to play. It looked like Tech would escape with a win in regulation, but a Hawks score with six seconds left sent the game to overtime.
The Warriors just didn't have an answer in overtime as the Hawks scored first and led by as many as nine points before Rinehart converted a pair of free throws for the final margin, 69-62.
Tech finished the contest 20-for-62 (32.3%) from the floor, 7-for-22 (31.8%) from behind the arc while also converting 15-of-22 (68.2%) free throws. The Warriors also outrebounded the Hawks 46-36 and held a 15-9 advantage in second chance points, but were outscored 40-24 in the paint.
Rinehart finished with a team-high 14 points while Seiss and Grose each scored 13. Grose also set a career-high with a game-high 13 rebounds, her second double-double this season, while Clements and
Rayana Villalpando both added eight boards.
"While we know we still have a lot of work to do, this trip to California has been a great one," said Tech Head Coach
Jessie Biggs. "It was a good experience for our team and gave a few of our players a chance to play in front of and spend time with their families."
The Warriors return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 3 when they face Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference foe, Marygrove College, at 530 p.m. in Detroit, Mich. Live coverage of the contest can be found at
