Box Score MASON, Ohio – The 10th-ranked Indiana Tech men's lacrosse team pulled out a 15-14 victory in overtime over No. 15 Kennesaw State at Mason High School in Mason, Ohio on Saturday.
After a controversial call overturned the would-be game-winner for the Owls (5-2), the Warriors (2-1) took full advantage, eventually getting
Nick Knauf open in the attack area for the game-winning goal three minutes into the overtime period.
It didn't look good in the early going for Tech as the defense struggled to stop the Owls who scored the first two goals of the contest and three of the first four.
Dan Schaepkens got the Warriors on the board four minutes into the contest as he was assisted by former Mason Comet,
Josh Puckett. Down 3-1, Tech responded with three consecutive goals one each for
Kyle Goehring, Puckett and
Anthony Blaisdell. It looked as though the Warriors were going to take a 4-3 lead into the second period, however, an Edward Thorne goal with 11 seconds to play in the first tied the score at four.
The second frame began much like the first with three Owl goals before Puckett found the net again.
Brian Nichter cut the KSU lead to one, but an Anthony Winters goal pushed the Owls lead back to two, 8-6. Puckett scored the third man-up goal for the Orange and Black just 1:45 before the half to score Tech's seventh point of the game.
Tyler Mathews scored the first goal of the third period for Kennesaw State, but Nichter answered two minutes later for the Warriors. The Owls scored again but back-to-back goals from Knauf and Blaisdell tied the game at 10. Playing a man down, KSU took the lead with 4:17 left in the period on a Thorne goal.
Another Thorne tally opened the fourth period, giving the Owls the 12-10 advantage. The hometown hero came through again for Tech as Puckett scored a man-up goal and
Collin Hoffman followed with his first tally of the game to knot the score at 12. After KSU took back the lead, Puckett netted the equalizer with 2:56 to play and Goehring netted his second goal with 53 seconds left in regulation to take the 14-13 lead. KSU won the ensuing faceoff and raced down the field to tie the score with 40 seconds to play.
After an early release penalty negated a goal by the Owls in overtime, Knauf delivered the game-winner for Tech.
Tech put 43 of their 62 shots on goal in the contest while KSU took just 27 shots with 19 going on goal.
Puckett paced the Warriors offense with seven points on five goals and two assists while Knauf finished with five (2 goals, 3 assists) and Nichter added four (2 goals, 2 assists).
Lee Raymond did an excellent job on face-offs as he won 13-of-18 to keep the Warriors in the contest.
Mathews and Thorne led the Owls as each scored four goals and had two assists for the visitors.
The Warriors return to the field on Sunday, Mar. 16 when they travel to Dayton, Ohio to face the 10th-ranked Dayton Flyers at 3 p.m.
