FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The 10th-ranked Indiana Tech men's lacrosse team did what they couldn't in the fall, defeating Siena Heights 9-5, extending their win streak to three on Tuesday at the Warriors Athletic Field.
Before the contest, the Warriors honored seven seniors who have spent the last four seasons competing for Indiana Tech. Those honored are;
Anthony Blaisdell,
Max Glova,
Collin Hoffman,
Patrick Kelly,
Alex Kueck and
Josh Puckett.
The Warriors (7-4) won the opening faceoff and after seven minutes of trading possessions,
Brian Nichter picked up a ground ball and found
Kyle Dommermuth who dodged around a defender and fired a strike into the back of the net from about 10 yards out for the 1-0 lead. After
Lee Raymond won the ensuing face-off,
Aidan Jarmus collected the ground ball and 31 seconds later Kelly found Puckett who scored his 46th goal of the season. Raymond won another face-off, leading to Puckett's second goal of the game, with an assist from Blaisdell for the 3-0 advantage.
Back-to-back goals from Nick Lyons got Siena Heights on the board and cut the lead to one with 7:21 left in the half, hut Jarmus won the ensuing face-off and one minute later,
Dan Schaepkens added to the Warriors lead, the final tally of the half making it 4-2, Warriors.
Puckett got the second half started with two unanswered goals to push the lead to four, 6-2. John Holowaty netted the next Saints goal and a man-up goal at the 6:14 mark in the third period cut the Warriors lead in half. Two minutes later, another senior, Hoffman, scored his ninth goal of the season to give the home team a 7-4 lead headed into the final period.
It was a very physical contest and both teams struggled to maintain possession in the opening minutes of the fourth. SHU finally gained control and scored another man-up tally to make it 7-5. Blaisdell added another goal, off an assist from Schaepkens with 1:11 to play to ice the game. The offense wasn't done though as Hoffman found Schaepkens as time expired to give Tech the four-point, 9-5 victory.
The Warriors outshot the Saints 39-25 in the contest and won ground balls, 32-25. Tech also finished 15-for-17 on face-offs and failed just six clears. Siena Heights finished 23-for-35 on clears and converted 2-of-4 extra-man opportunities while the Warriors went 0-for-5.
Puckett led the Warriors with four points on four goals while Schaepkens finished with two goals and an assist and Hoffman tallied one goal and two assists.
Loftus, Tech's goalie, improved to 6-4 on the season, making 11 saves while allowing five goals in 60 minutes of play.
The Warriors hit the road for a first-place battle in the CCLA Division II West, as they take on No. 5 Grand Valley State in Allendale, Mich.
