FORT WAYNE, Ind. – For the second consecutive game, the Indiana Tech men's soccer team went to overtime, and for the second straight game they got the win, this time a 2-1 decision over Madonna to open Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play.
In the 102nd minute, Adam night made a run down the left side of the field where he received a cross from
Robbie Kiernan, and after taking a touch, fired a shot from 25 yards out the snuck just inside the far post for the golden goal.
The Warriors (4-1-1, 1-0) bookended the contest with markers as
Gaston Raposo netted his first tally of the season, and the first of the game, in the first minute with an assist from
Mitch Smith. Smith sent a cross from the left side of the field and Gaston took a touch and ripped a shot from 20 yards, just under the cross bar in the upper right 90 for the 1-0 lead.
Tech's defense and goal keeper,
Mac Baker, withstood several runs by the Crusaders (5-3, 0-1) to maintain a 1-0 lead heading into the half. Madonna held a 9-5 advantage in shots in the period while Crusaders' keeper, Marcel Schmid, stopped the only shot he faced in the half, while Baker made five saves in the frame.
Madonna converted on its first shot of the second half as Doug Beason netted the equalizer. In the 53rd minute, Danny Swanson played the ball over the defense and Beason was able to make a run, getting a touch before slipping the ball just out of reach of Baker to tie the score at 1.
The Crusaders tallied seven shots in the period, putting three on frame while Tech took just three shots in the second 45, with none finding their target. The teams combined for six shots, four for Madonna and two for Tech, in the first overtime, but Madonna but the only shot on frame.
The first real scoring chance in either overtime period came off the foot of Knight, who ended the contest with his fourth marker of the season.
The visitors tallied 21 shots in the game to 11 for Tech with the Crusaders holding a 9-3 margin in shots on frame. Baker made eight saves in the game while Schmid made one save for Madonna.
Tech will continue their conference season on Wednesday, Oct. 1 when they travel to Lima, Ohio to face No. 23 Northwestern Ohio with kickoff scheduled for 4 p.m.
