GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Indiana Tech women's soccer team put forth one of their best efforts of the season, but it wasn't enough on Saturday as Aquinas won the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference opener, 2-1.
The Saints improved to 7-1-1 on the season and 1-0 in the WHAC while the Warriors fall to 6-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
It was a hard fought first half that featured 15 shots, eight by the home team and seven by Tech, but both keepers were up to the task early on. Lindsay Armstrong stopped all three of the Warriors targets on frame in the half while
Bre Wojnarowski did the same for Tech, stopping the Saints three shots on frame.
In the 57th minute, the home team got the scoring started as Casey Westveer netted her first goal of the game, second of the season, with an assist from Claire Krohn. Westveer netted the eventual game-winner in the 69th minute for the win.
The Warriors didn't make it easy, however, as
Miranda Smith found
Tori Singstock in the 71st minute to record Tech's first marker of the game and cut the lead to one. Several other missed changes doomed Tech to a 2-1 defeat.
"I'm proud of our effort today," said Tech Head Coach
Jim Lipocky. "We had several missed chances, but if the ball bounces our way a couple times it's a different outcome. We just need to keep this up the rest of the season."
The Warriors return home on Wednesday, Oct. 1 when they host Cornerstone in their WHAC home opener. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
