Four Goal Fourth Not Enough as @INTechMLAX Drops CCLA Opener

SCORE: IT 7, GCC 12
RECORD: No. 16 Indiana Tech (4-5, 0-1 CCLA), No. 5 Grove City (6-2, 1-0 CCLA)
LOCATION: Angola, Indiana (Fred Zollner Stadium)

BRIEF: The 16th-ranked Indiana Tech men's lacrosse team scored four goals in the fourth quarter, but couldn't complete the comeback in a loss to fifth-ranked Grove City, 12-7 at Fred Zollner Stadium on the campus of Trine University on Friday night. It was supposed to be the home opener for the Warriors, but a sloppy field forced Tech to move the game to the artificial surface in Angola, Indiana.

FLOW:
An unassisted goal from Dan Schaepkens put Tech on the board first, but five unanswered tallies for the Wolverines gave the visitors the 5-1 lead after one.

Jace Childs connected with Schaepkens for the Warriors second tally and Nick Knauf netted an unassisted goal, but the Wolverines match them with two goals to keep the four goal lead.

Grove City scored the final goal of the first half and opened the second with five consecutive tallies, including a 4-0 third quarter, to take a commanding 12-3 lead.

The Orange and Black continued to fight, scoring four goals in the final 15 minute, including a pair from Schaepkens, but it wasn't enough in the loss.

IN THE NUMBERS:
Schaepkens led the team with five points scoring five goals with one helper on nine shots. Knauf scored a pair of goals and Brian Nichter added a tally for the Warriors.

Kevin Goehring led the squad with 11 ground balls while Christian Delzappo led the team in the circle, winning 10-for-17 faceoffs.

The teams were fairly even across most categories except turnovers as Tech coughed up the ball 26 times to just 19 for the Wolverines, the difference in the contest.

UP NEXT: The Warriors return to action on Wednesday, Apr. 15 when they host No. 7 Dayton in a CCLA South matchup. Faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Warrior Athletic Field.
