Â
BRIEF: The Indiana Tech baseball team pushed the start time back 90 minutes, but were able to play both games against 23rd-ranked University of Northwestern Ohio, dropping both 5-2, 5-0. The Warriors got off to a good start but the offense went flat, stranding 21 runners and striking out 19 times in two games. Tech had 10 hits and 12 walks on the day, but scored just twice.
Â
FLOW:GAME 1Zach Fyfe continued to dazzle with his glove at shortstop, ending the first with a stellar turn for a 6-4-3 double play and the momentum carried over to the Warriors half of the inning as
Romer Portes deposited a 3-2 pitch over the centerfield wall for a 2-run home run and an early lead.
Â
Another double play ended the second for the Racers but the Tech offense stranded a leadoff single in the second and a pair of runners in the third, allowing UNOH to stick around. An RBI single plated a run in the third and the first three batters reached in the fourth, including a leadoff walk and the Racers got a grand slam to take a 5-2 lead.
Â
Tech had a chance to get some runs in the fourth, loading the bases with two outs, but couldn't get the two-out hit. In the eighth, the Orange and Black again packed the bases, this time with one out, but again the big hit was not there in the loss.
Â
GAME 2The Racers opened the scoring in game two as five hits and a pair of walks led to a four run third for the visitors. In the bottom of the inning,
Steve Remesnik drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third with one out, but a pair of strikeouts ended the inning.
Â
Tech had another chance to cut into the deficit in the fifth, putting two on with one out, but a fielder's choice and another strikeout ended the threat. Back-to-back hits in the sixth added to the Racers lead, but a rope from
Dezmon Nunn to
Brian Hakes cut down another run from scoring to end the inning.
Â
The Warriors stranded a leadoff walk in the sixth and left the bases loaded in the seventh to end the game.
Â
THE NUMBERS:
GAME 1Derek Morgan collected two of the Warriors seven hits while Portes had the only two RBIs.
