GULF SHORES, Ala. – The Indiana Tech men's track and field team began the day looking to become just the third school in NAIA history to win five consecutive national championships, but fell just short of that goal on Saturday, finishing as co-runner-up at the 2015 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium and Sports Complex.
Â
The Warriors tied with Wayland Baptist for second-place with 55 points, just four behind the first-time national champions, Concordia (Neb.). The event came down to the final race, the 4x400m relay and the Orange and Black looked prime to win the crown, but an injury during the race allowed the Bulldogs to score just enough points for the win.
Â
Tech added nine individual All-Americans; two relay All-Americans and a pair of national champions on the final day of competition.Â
Â
The first individual crown was won by
Deshawn Woods in the 400m hurdles where the sophomore ran the second-fastest time in school history, finishing in 51.92. Senior
Robert Rose joined Woods on the podium with a third place finish in a time of 52.87.
Â
Harris Edwards III added the second national title for the Warriors, taking the 200m crown with a school record time of 20.71 while
John Broaden took seventh in 21.36. The duo also took part in the 100m dash where Edwards III also set a school record, taking third in 10.33 while Broaden finished seventh in 10.60.
Â
In the 400m,
John Hester finished fifth in 48.44 while also running on the All-American 4x400m relay team with
D'Quan Ruth, Rose and Woods. The other relay team of
Khalid Fuller, Edwards III, Souvannasing and Broaden took fourth in the 4x100m relay with a time of 40.68, the eighth best mark in program history.
Â
The Orange and Black added two more field All-Americans as
Trevor Wright broke the school record twice in route to a seventh place finish in the shot put with a toss of 16.35m (53-7.75) and
TJ Williams finished eighth in the triple jump with a distance of 14.37m (47-1.75).
Â
Tech got another school record and a pair of All-Americans on Friday from
Alain Dixon and
Herb Gary to end the 2015 outdoor campaign with 11 total All-Americans.
