Â
BRIEF: The winning continued for the Indiana Tech baseball team as they downed the Saints of Aquinas in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament elimination game with a 14-2 victory. It was a one run game until the sixth when the Warriors plated eight runs to pull away.
Zach Sailors was terrific on the mound for his fourth win.
Â
FLOW:It was a bit of an ominous start for the Warriors as the offense went down in order in the first and the Saints got a run on a pair of hits and a walk. They had the bases loaded with two outs, but Sailors escaped the jam with a groundout.
Â
The Orange and Black drew even in the third as
Caleb Heller led off with a single and scored on a bases loaded walk to
Romer Portes. The Warriors missed a chance to add-on as a strikeout ended the inning.
Â
Sailors worked around a pair of hits in the third and two innings later the offense was back at it as
Chris Gaynor led off with a single, advanced to second on
Zach Fyfe's sacrifice bunt and then stole third.
Dezmon Nunn promptly followed with a single to plate Gaynor, but a double play ended the threat.
Â
In the bottom of the fifth, Aquinas got a one out walk, but
Brian Hakes caught him stealing second, which was key, as the third hitter of the inning doubled. Sailors got out of the inning unscathed with a strikeout.
Â
The Orange and Black broke things open in the sixth plating eight runs on five hits to take a commanding 10-1 lead. Portes led off with a double and
Tighe Koehring followed with a base hit to put runners on the corners for
Matt Bandor who plated Portes with a sacrifice fly. A pair of two out walks loaded the bases and Fyfe plated two with a single. Portes and Koehring each added two-run singles for the nine run lead.
Â
Peyton Newsom opened the seventh with the first home run of the tournament and a two-out RBI single by
Steve Remesnik made it 12-1 with a wild pitch scoring the Warriors 13th run of the contest.
Â
A hit and an error plated another Warriors run in the eighth while the Saints got a two-out, RBI single in the ninth to round out the scoring.
Â
IN THE NUMBERS:The Warriors belted 14 hits in the contest led by Portes' 3-for-4 day, with two runs scored and three RBIs while bumping his average to .412…Nunn, Koehring and Gaynor each had a pair of hits while Nunn, Heller, Gaynor and Fyfe each scored twice…Tech drew nine walks and had five stolen bases with Nunn swiping a pair…Sailors scattered six hits over seven innings, allowing one run with four walks and three strikeouts…Tech has outscored their opponents 400-275 on the season with a 71-37 margin in the sixth inning
Â
UP NEXT: The Warriors will face Davenport at 7 p.m. with the stakes of the game to be determined by the outcome of the DU, UNOH/Madonna contest. If Davenport loses, the game will be for the right to face the UNOH/Madonna winner in the WHAC Tournament Championship game, however, if Davenport wins, the Warriors and Panthers will play in the WHAC Championship with Tech needing a pair of wins to claim the crown.
