CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The second-ranked Indiana Tech wrestling team took on three ranked opponents on Saturday at the Campbellsville Duals, defeating 15
th-ranked University of the Cumberlands, 24-12, and 18
th-ranked Campbellsville, 18-15, and falling to NCAA Division II foe and 14
th-ranked Newberry, 19-16.
Starting off their day against University of the Cumberlands,
Sawyer Miller gave the Warriors an early 3-0 lead at 125-pounds with a 6-0 decision while Matt Miller and
Thomas Garty provided the Orange and Black with wins via tech fall (16-1) and a pin to put Tech up 14-3 after four matches.
John Weldon,
Antonio Rodriguez and
Dillon Francisco would rattle off an 11-4 decision, 8-3 decision and a 14-0 major decision, respectively, to give the Warriors a commanding 24-6 lead as they won their first dual of the day.
Tech would then turn its attention to Newberry, where once again
Sawyer Miller used a 6-5 decision to give the Warriors the lead after the first match. Garty would stop a two-round losing skid with an 8-3 decision at 149-lbs. to knot the match up at six-all. The two teams would split the next four matches, with the Warriors ahead 16-13 thanks to a major decision from Weldon and a pin by Francisco, but the Wolves would get one-point decision wins in the final two matches to give the Orange and Black their first dual loss of the season.
Second-year head coach
Thomas Pompei would get his wrestlers refocused for their final match of the day against the host Tigers, where they came back from an early 6-0 deficit. With the score knotted up at 12 after the 184-lbs. bout,
Trevor Yank would give the Warriors a crucial six points with a pin at 1:42 to give Tech the 18-12 lead with just one match to go, and while the Tigers would take the win in the 285-lbs. battle, Pompei's squad would finish their day with the 18-15 win.
Tech (3-1 duals record) returns to action on Sunday as they send a group of wrestlers to the Michigan State Open. Action is set to begin at 9 a.m. from Jenison Field House.
