FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The fourth-seeded Indiana Tech men's soccer team opened their Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Tournament action on Saturday afternoon with a 4-2 win over fifth-seeded Madonna at Warrior Athletic Field.
The Warriors struck first in the 15
th minute as
Ethan Payne headed in the game's first score off the
Andrew Higgins corner kick.
Mitch Smith would aid in increasing the Orange and Black's advantage as he took the header in for his sixth goal of the season in the 19
th minute, also off the Higgins corner. With just minutes remaining before the midway point,
Roman Schindler recorded his 13
th goal of the season off the assist from
Ruben Leonardo in the 41
st minute to provide Tech with a 3-0 lead at half.
The Warriors weren't done with their scoring efforts in the second half, as
Brennan Cochran took the assist off Smith from the left side of the box and sent it in to push Tech up 4-0 in the 55
th minute. The visitors would tab two late goals, first from Yuri Farkas in the 69
th minute and then from Danny Swanson with the penalty kick score in the 76
th minute, but the Warriors would regroup to control the final 10 minutes of the game and earn their first WHAC Tournament win since the 2009 season.
Tech (14-3-2) will be back in action for the semifinal round of the WHAC tournament on Wednesday, where they will face top seed University of Northwestern Ohio at 2 p.m. from Racer Soccer Field.
