FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech men's basketball team snapped a two-game losing skid on Wednesday evening at the Schaefer Center as they defeated Marygrove, 97-74, in their Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) home opener.
Miles Robinson led all players with 29 points on 11-17 shooting and went 7-10 from behind the three-point line, while dishing out a career-high nine assists, grabbing five rebounds and collecting three steals.
Tanner Watkins broke the career three-point field goal record (219) at Tech as he hit six triples en route to 20 points.
Lavonte Davis added 18 points, six rebounds, three blocks, two steals and a pair of assists and became the career record holder for blocks (130) at Tech.
CJ Bussey chipped in 13 points off the bench while
Scott Schwieterman grabbed a season-high 10 rebounds.
The two sides would trade baskets over the first few minutes of the game before Tech used four consecutive three-pointers to take a 16-8 lead with 13:08 to go in the first half and cause the Mustangs to use an early timeout.
A triple from Robinson, who scored 21 of his points in the opening half, would give the Warriors a 10-point lead, which they would retain for most of the first half, growing it to as much as 16 with just over a minute to go in the half following a 7-0 run to go up 49-33 over the Mustangs, but the visitors would counter quickly six consecutive points in the paint to cut the deficit to 10 at the half.
Watkins would then find his range to begin the second as he scored 12 of the Warriors first 19 points of the half, including three triples as part of four in a row from the Orange and Black, to put the hosts up 23 over Marygrove.
Not to be outdone, Robinson would cap a 9-0 with a fast-break layup to increase the lead to 30 with 12 minutes to go and would continue to show off his range with back-to-back three pointers to make it a 85-57 contest with just over 17 minutes to go in the game.
Marygrove would cut the deficit to 20 with just over four and a half minutes to go, but it was too-little too-late for the Mustangs as Tech set season-highs in points (97), field goals made (36), three-point field goals made (19) and assists (25) as they cruised to the 97-74 win.
Tech (6-3, 3-1 WHAC) continues their homestand on Saturday when they host No. 2-ranked Cornerstone. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. from the Schafer Center.
