FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech men's basketball team fell to No. 2-ranked Cornerstone, 72-54, on Saturday afternoon at the Schaefer Center in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) play.
Lavonte Davis scored a team-high 17 points, grabbed five rebounds and blocked two shots while
Scott Schwieterman added 10 points and six rebounds.
Tanner Watkins and
Miles Robinson chipped in nine points apiece as the Warriors dropped their third game against either the number one or two-ranked team in the nation this season.
The two sides got off to a slow start offensively, with Cornerstone holding a 16-13 lead over the Warriors 10 minutes into the game. Davis would go on a 7-0 run over a two and a half minute stretch though to give the Orange and Black a 20-18 advantage with 7:48 to go in the first half.
A thunderous fast break by
Mitch Morken would bring the crowd at the Schaefer Center to its feet as Tech extended its lead to 25-20 with 4:58 to go in the half and take a 31-30 lead into the break over the number two team in the country.
The Warriors would continue to hold leads of up to three through the first eight minutes of the second half, but Cornerstone's Kyle Steigenga would score 21 of his game-high 38 points in the final 20 minutes, and used a 9-0 run by the 2016 First-Team All-American to retake the lead from the hosts and hold a 47-41 advantage with 11:08 to go in the game.
Tech would stay within three possessions of the Golden Eagles over the next six minutes, but the visitors would close the game on a 15-3 run to hand the Warriors their fourth loss and second in WHAC play.
Tech (6-4, 3-2 WHAC) returns to action on Wednesday as they host Aquinas to close out their three-game homestand. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. from the Schaefer Center.
