FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The fourth-seeded Indiana Tech women's basketball team defeated fifth-seeded Cornerstone, 68-58, in the first round of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Tournament on Thursday evening at the Schaefer Center.
Haley Cook had a team-high 14 points to go along with five rebounds and two assists.
Taylor Seiss and
Rayana Villalpando each scored 11 points apiece while Villalpando grabbed seven rebounds and dished out three assists.
Kendall Knapke added 10 points, nine rebounds and three assists while
Taylor Carver chipped in eight points and four rebounds.
Cornerstone jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the first quarter and headed into the break with a 14-10 lead. After the Golden Eagles pushed their lead to 20-15 with 7:38 to play in the first half, Tech would go on 9-0 spurt and ended the half on a 16-6 run to head into the locker with a 31-26 lead.
The Warriors then opened the second half on a 9-2 run, sparked by five points by Knapke, as they pushed their advantage to 42-30 with 5:09 left in the third quarter. The Orange and Black would close the period on an 11-5 spurt to head into the final 10 minutes up by 17 points.
The visitors used a 7-0 spurt to open the fourth quarter and cut the deficit to 10 in the opening two and a half minutes of the period and got the score to 57-54 with three minutes to go after an 8-2 run. Cook would answer with a jumper to spark an 8-0 run for the hosts and extend their advantage to 65-54 with 30 seconds to go as the Warriors won their 21
st game of the season.
Tech (21-10) now moves on to the semifinals of the WHAC Tournament and will face off with eighth-ranked and top-seeded Davenport in Grand Rapids, Michigan on Saturday.
