FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The 19
th-ranked Indiana Tech ACHA Division 1 men's ice hockey team defeated Midland in a shootout, 3-2 (2-0 SO), on Saturday evening at the SportONE/Parkview Icehouse to sweep the weekend set.
In what was almost identical game to the one played last night between the two schools, Saturday's contest was a tightly contested thriller between two second-year programs. Tech took the lead first at 6:01 in the first period when
Adam Jonak, his second goal of the weekend.
Midland would rally back with two goals, the first coming at 17:49 in the first and the latter occurring nine minutes into the second period.
Joe Molfetta would tie the game with 69 seconds left in the second.
After a scoreless third period and overtime session, the two squads went to another shootout, their third in four meetings this season. Jonak buried the first attempt for the hosts, while the visiting Warriors missed their first two opportunities. After a Tech miss, Midland would tie the shootout at one apiece to bring
Jace Childs, the hero from Friday night's game, up to center ice, but he was stopped by the Warriors Jarin Aden.
Another miss from the Warriors opened the door for Molfetta, who ripped one past Aden to put Tech up 2-1, and
Zach Larson shut the door with a save to give the host Warriors the win.
Larson finished with 29 saves, while
Zack Morlock and
Brian Skillicorn tallied assists on Molfetta's first goal.
Tech (20-12-1-1) takes on ACHA Division 2 Michigan State next weekend in a home-and-home set, their final tune-up before the Great Lakes Collegiate Hockey League Tournament.
