Tech Holds Off Late Charge from Crusaders for Fifth Straight Win

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech men's basketball team won its fifth straight game, and eighth straight Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) contest, as they defeated Madonna, 62-58, on Wednesday evening at the Schaefer Center.

Reigning WHAC Player of the Week CJ Bussey scored a game-high 15 points off the bench, going 4-6 from the field and knocking down three of his four three-point field goal attempts, while dishing out three assists. Scott Schwieterman recorded his second consecutive double-double, and fourth of the season, with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Lavonte Davis just missed a double-double of his own with 11 points and nine rebounds to go along with two blocks. Jantzen Goodwin added nine points while Tanner Watkins chipped in six rebounds, five points and four assists.

Tech would get out to a 12-4 lead in the first six minutes of the game, with Bussey knocking down a pair of three-pointers to build the lead. The Warriors would then use a 9-0 spurt to increase their lead to 12 points with eight minutes to go while continuing to hold a double-digit lead throughout the first half and headed into the locker room leading 38-26 at the half.

Coach John Peckinpaugh's team would increase their lead to 15 with 12:41 left in the second half following a 7-2 spurt. The Crusaders would not go down lightly however, using an 8-3 run to cut the deficit to 58-52 with six minutes to go.

The visitors would make it a one-possession game following a 6-0 run, with Austin Johnson's fast break layup cutting the Warriors lead to 61-58 with 44 seconds left in the game. Tech would burn some clock though, as they grabbed two offensive rebounds off of missed shots to chip the clock to 11 seconds.

A missed free throw on the front end of a one-and-one though, would give the Crusaders a shot to tie the game, but Max Huber was able to corral a triple with just a second of the clock, and the freshman would break a 3:19 scoring drought to officially put the game out of reach with a free throw to give the Warriors their fifth straight home win.

Tech (16-5, 11-2 WHAC) heads to Grand Rapids, Michigan on Saturday as they take on No. 1-ranked and WHAC-leading Cornerstone. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. from Mol Arena.
