Tech Rallies for Doubleheader Sweep in Home Opener

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech baseball team opened up its home slate for the 2018 season on Saturday afternoon as they swept Lourdes in a doubleheader, winning 6-5 in 10 innings and 6-4, at Warrior Field.

While the Warriors only had five hits in the opener, they made every one count as they came back from 1-0 and 5-2 deficits to win in extra innings. The Gray Wolves would use a single up the middle from Dan Johnson to extend their lead to 5-2 with nobody out in the top of the ninth, but Chase Nistor would work out of the jam to keep the Warriors in striking distance for the bottom of the ninth.

An error, walk and a single to open up the bottom of the ninth would give Tech the bases loaded with nobody out. A fielder's choice from Brandon Burch would cut the deficit to 5-3 while Daniel Johnson II doubled down the left field line to make it a one-run game. The hosts would push across the tying run two batters later as Glen Crabtree bobbled the grounder from Matt Bandor and Burch would come home to make it a 5-5 game.

After sending the visitors down in order in the top of the 10th, the Warriors would waste no time in the bottom of the inning as Dillin Diehm led off the inning with a walk while Javier Castandea would move pinch runner Reese Olden into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, setting the stage for Ryan Meisenheimer, who would smash a double down the right filed line on a 2-1 count to score Olden and give the Warriors the walk-off win.

Lourdes would start off the second game with a run in their first three batters thanks to a pair of doubles while they would tack on single runs in the second and fourth to extend their lead to 3-0. Tech would slowly chop away the lead however, scoring once in the fifth and seventh to cut the deficit to one.

The eighth inning would prove to be the magical one for the hosts as they used three hits, including a three-run homer from Tighe Koehring, to go ahead 6-4. Joe Pratt would come in to pitch in the top of the ninth and work around a run to strike out the last two batters to close out the game and keep Tech a perfect 25-0 against the Gray Wolves.

Tech (4-1, 4-1 WHAC) concludes its fall ball season on Sunday as they host Lourdes in a single nine-inning game. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. from Warrior Field.
