FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech men's ice hockey team improved its modest win streak to four on Saturday evening as they defeated Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) foe Rochester in overtime, 4-3, at the SportONE/Parkview Ice House.
"We did not have our best game tonight," head coach
Frank DiCristofaro said. "We need to have a better pre-game approach. Give Rochester credit, they battled hard. I have to give a ton of credit to our defense, ending the game short-manned is always tough. There are some things we need to address this week to get ready for tough weekend set against Kent State.
After 35 minutes of scoreless action, Tech would take the lead with a nifty goal from
Zach Bennett while
Jace Childs would make it a 2-0 Warrior lead with just 55 seconds left in the second period.
Rochester would not lay down lightly though, scoring three goals in the third period, including the game-tying score with just 103 seconds left in regulation, to send the game into overtime. The hosts would not need long in the extra session though, as
Jarrett Pfeiffer would light the lamp just 32 seconds into the five-minute overtime to give the Warriors the sweep of their conference rival.
Childs and
Joe Molfetta would each record a pair of assists while
Alex Gregorich and
Adam Jonak each had one.
Nick Papandrea had the Warriors third goal while
Zach Larson made 31 saves in net to pick up his second win of the season.
Tech (4-0-0, 2-0-0 WHAC) returns to action next week as they start a three-game road trip with a two-game set at former Great Lakes Collegiate Hockey League (GLCHL) foe Kent State. Puck drop is set for 7:30 on Friday and Saturday from the Kent State Ice Arena.
