Warriors Fall to Golden Eagles in First Conference Loss

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 11-ranked Indiana Tech women's basketball team fell to Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) foe Cornerstone, 71-64, on Saturday afternoon at Mol Arena.

Haley Cook and Keanna Gary both scored a team-high 20 points in the loss, with Gary grabbing 15 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season. DeAnn Kauffman added 11 points while Kendall Knapke added seven points, five rebounds and four assists.

The game would be an offensive struggle for both teams, with the Warriors shooting a season-low 32.8% from the floor and hitting just six of 24 three-pointers, while Cornerstone shooting 39.1% from the field and converting just two of 13 attempts from behind the arc.

The Golden Eagles would get out to an early 8-2 lead over Tech just three minutes into the contest. CU would stretch their lead out to as many as eight points in the quarter as they took a 19-12 lead into the first quarter break.

A basket from Kauffman would kick-start a 9-0 for the Orange and Black to start the second as Cook capped the run with a triple to tie the game up at 21-21 with 4:53 left in the period. Tech would take its first lead of the game six possessions later as Cook hit another three-pointer to make it a 26-23 game at the 3:28 mark. A 7-0 run from the hosts though, would give Cornerstone the lead back at 30-26.

Cook would score five of Tech's next seven points on a 7-2 run however, to give the Warriors a 33-32 lead with 43 seconds to go in the half, but the Golden Eagles would score the next four points to head into the locker room up 36-33.

Gary would score five of the Warriors first seven points to begin the third quarter as Tech cut the deficit down to one twice in the three minutes, but the Golden Eagles would use a 12-0 run to take a 14-point lead at 54-40 with 3:06 left in the period. Back-to-back baskets from Gary would cut the deficit down to nine at 56-47 as the game turned to the final quarter of regulation.

Baskets from Kauffman and Gary would bring the Warriors to within five just over two minutes into the fourth, and while the Golden Eagles would try to pull away from the 11th-ranked team in the nation, they couldn't extend their advantage to more than eight in the final seconds, but it would be enough to snap Tech's eight game-winning streak and send the visitors home with a 71-64 loss.

Tech (9-2, 3-1 WHAC) returns to action Wednesday as they travel back to Grand Rapids for a date with WHAC foe Aquinas. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. from the Sturrus Sports and Fitness Center.
